There was Saint Patrick's parade at the Motomachi shopping streets on Sunday, March 12, a week early. The day is cerebrated by Irish communities around the world. The Saint Patrick day has been cerebrated by parade here at Motomachi for a few years now. This is a relatively new event for Yokohama locals.

Azuma Shrine is a tiny Shinto shrine loved by locals of Honmoku for a long time. It enshrines Yamato Takeru, a deity and legendary hero appeared on Nihongi or the Chronicles of Japan in AD720. The shrine is said to have stood since 1354 when the statue of the deity was enshrined. The rumor has it that the statue was caught by a fishnet off Honmoku beach by a fisherman when it was adrift from Kisarazu, the opposite side of the bay of Tokyo. The statue was slightly burned. It was believed it was thrown into a fire by kids when he changed his body into a kid to join them who were making a fire on a chilly winter day. He rushed into the waters out of pain and had reached to Honmoku. But it is believed that it was brought from a shrine in Kisarazu. The statue was burned and lost during the air raids in the 1945.

On the precinct of the shrine, there are apricot trees. And flowers of the trees are in bloom now. Sankeien garden, a famous Japanese garden is located 20 minutes from the shrine. Many people come to visit the garden to see blossoms all the way. But you can see apricot flowers here without paying an admission every day if you were living in this neighborhood.
Honmoku used to be a fisherman's village on Honmoku beach where seaweeds were cultivated. Now there stands large warehouses, container terminals and factories where the beaches were stretched. No one can imagine there were beautiful beaches here. But you can still find a trace that shows there was once a fisherman village and beaches. The shrine is one of those places.

Since they celebrated Chinese new year day on January 28, there have been held Chinese new year events in Yokohama Chinatown. Restaurants, shops and streets are decorated for the celebration. The streets are in festive mode. Yamashita cho park, the former site of the Qing dynasty's Chinese consulate, was full of visitors who came to enjoy the atmosphere of Chinese new year. Since the Minato Mirai line was connected with other private lines, the number of visitors to Yokohama Chinatonw has been increasing. The park was overcrowded with people.
Dragon and Lion dances are the indispensable for the celebration. This year a team of high schoolers came from all the way from Kobe, a west port city near Osaka to join the event. They have a Chinatown there. But the town is called Nanjin town, after a City in China. Their team has been competed in the world Chinese dragon lion dance competitions many times.

They are all Japanese with no Chinese ancestry. All of them have learned to practice the performance after they entered the school, Kobe municipal commercial high. They acquire those professional skill during three years of highschool life. It is amazing. I am very proud of them. I wish we could have such a wonderful team of our own here in Yokohama. Please come to Yokohama to show your performance again!
Japan Brewers Cup 2017 was held at Osanbashi International passenger terminal this weekend. 37 brewers and importers gathered to show off their beers. The Osanbashi hall in Osanbashi terminal was crowded with beer lovers. The consumption of beer has been shrinking in Japan. But the population of craft beer lovers is increasing. This event gives good opportunity over tasting beer from micro brewers across the country at one place.
I visited the event Saturday evening after work.
I tried : California Common by Brimmer Brewing,
Cold Brew IPA by a Portland brewer ROUGE,
Pilsner by Kure Beer and
Irish Ale by Preston Ale Brewery
Kure Beer is from Kure city, Hiroshima, where the large naval base is located. The adorable sailor doll is their mascot. The pilsner tastes like a wheat beer, light and smooth.
The Cold Brew IPA has refreshing taste. Portland is known as the capital of micro breweries. I really want to visit the city and try craft beer there someday. Irish Ale is a dark beer like Guiness, but that distinctive taste of dark beer is not that strong. Maybe I should visit Ireland and try different dark beers at Pub someday, too.
From the terminal, you can see Akarenga Red Brick warehouse, Minato Mirai area, North pier, Yamashita Park and the Bay Bridge, a panoramic view of the harbor. Many come to view the harbor from there. The harbor from the terminal in twilight is one of my favorate views of Yokohama.
Kwan Tai Temple is located at Chuzan ro(中山路) and Kwan Tai Temple street(関帝廟通) on Yokohama Chinatown. It enshrines a legendary warrior in the three kingdoms period after Han Dynasty collapsed in the ancient China. Kwan Yu, Kwan Tai's lifetime name, is a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei of the Eastern Han dynasty. He is worshiped as a Taoist symbol of integrity and loyalty. There are Kwan Tai Temples where Chinese and People with Chinese ancestry live.

Chinatown was formed in this place on the foreign settlement after a treaty port was opened here in 1859. Chinese came to this newly built port from Shanghai and Hong Kong. Some were Western trading houses' clerks. (They were known as Compradors.) Some were coming as cocks, barbers or tailors. There were few Japanese who understood their languages and their life styles. So Westerners needed Chinese as a bridge between themselves and Japanese at the early days of Japan's modernization.
It is said that someone built a small shrine and placed a wooden statue of Kwan Tai in 1862. It has been the center of the community. The first Kwan Tai Temple was founded by donation among the community in 1871. The temple was destroyed three times in the past: The first was destroyed during the big earthquake in 1923. The second was by air raids during the Worldwide War 2 in 1945. The third by fire of suspected arson on the new year day of 1986. The current temple was built after the fire.

The temple has witnessed what happened in the city. Everytime it was destroyed, it came back again. The temple is now an important part of the city and the symbol of its resilience. On the new year day of 2017, the temple was crowded with people from early in the morning who wish their happiness during the year.
On the streets of Yokohama Chinatown, you can feel the atmosphere of Chistmas here and there. One of the oldest restaurants in the town, Heichinro, decorates a tall Christmas tree in front of their restaurant every year. Every time I see this tree being placed I feel the year will end soon.

Restaurants in Yokohama Chinatown are busy with those people, who come to enjoy delicious Chinese food.

There are houses and buildings originally built by westerners who lived on the hill. One of them is Ehrismann house on the Motomachi park near the Yokohama general foreign cemetery. The house was a residence of a Swiss businessman, is now owned by the city and open for public. The house is decorated by Finish style chrismas tree this year. ( Those old Western houses on Yamate hill, known as "Yokan", open for public like Ehrismann house, are chrismas-decorated in various country's style. ) People are coming to spend weekends visiting those "Yokan" and seeing those decorations.
Ginko trees on the Yamashita street are bearing fruits. Ginko nuts are one of delicacies. You will see locals picking dropped nuts on the ground early in the morning around later of October.
In 1960's the trams were main means of transportation for most living in downtown Yokohama. They were going north and south along the Honmoku main street back then. The tramways was once used to transport freight. Krin Beer Factory in Yamate has a subline from the factory to the Honmoku line. They used the line to ship beer bottles until the factory was destroyed by the great earthquake in 1923 and moved to Namamugi near Yokohama station.
I would use the tram between Mugita and SSankeien to go to a Kindergarten for three years. I remember I stood near the driver's seat and enjoyed the view of the street in front from there.
The tram lines were abolished in the 1970's when the age of motorization came and people were having cars. Some street cars have landed in Yokohama Tramway Museum, Takigashira, Negishi, which is dedicated to telling the history of the tramway in the town. They are preserved in good condition. The advertisements inside the cars were from those years the cars were in service.

Weather of this time of year is unstable. However, we are having sunny days with temperature going up around 20 C or 68F these days like last Saturday. Families are coming to Yamashita park to spend their weekends outside. Maybe the mascot of the town, Swingy, wanted to take a walk, too. He welcomed the visitors in the park.

Blossoms of Hanamizuki, or American dog woods, are in bloom. The trees are originally from North America. They were brought to Japan as a gesture of good will from the United States. Now the blossoms are ubiquitous in the country and the indispensable around this time of year.
You may not know about the existance of Chinese Cemetery in Negishi. It is not known as much as Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery in Yamate. The Chinese Cemetery is located near Negishi Shinrin Park behind the main street between Yamate and Negishi. Even local people find difficult
to find it.
The Chinese Cemetery was built by the donation by Chinese community here in 1873. Before then, Deceased Chinese were buried in the cemetery in Yamate. As many of them were buried temporarily until they were transported to their home land in China, the Chinese community wished to have a seperate grave yard from the Yamate Cemetery, which was occupied by westerners.
The shrine was built by materials brought from Southern China. The shirine houses Bodhisattva statue. The building was built by a typical Chinese design in Taiwan and Southern China. There is a courtyard inside the building.
When Port of Yokohama was opened some 150 years ago, many Chinese came to Yokohama and Kobe as staff for western trading firms as they knew western customs and business practice, and could communicate with Japanese by Chinese letters. Other Chinese came as a cook, a tailor, or barber following them. They came to Japan as a migrant worker first. They wished their bodies would be sent home when they died. However, many those Chinese stayed and slept here. Now thousands of souls are resting peacefully. They are the foundation of Chinese community in Yokohama.Shinya Otahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02601324377788900709noreply@blogger.com1Oshiba dai 7, Naka-Ku, Yokohama, 231-0858 35.428279675645761 139.6363022061843835.42807767564576 139.63598720618438 35.428481675645763 139.63661720618438tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7157864182846053462.post-48115210864486231682016-04-10T10:07:00.000+09:002016-04-10T10:07:12.426+09:00Cherry Blossoms on the hill of Honmoku Sancho Park, Yokohama

On the hill of Honmoku near the main street of Honmoku, there is a park called Honmoku Sancho Park, or Honmoku Hill top Park. It was in the middle of the US Naval housing area. After the return of the area to Japan in the 1990's, the hill was redeveloped as a public park. This park is loved by locals as a cherry blossom viewing place.
Different from Negishi Shinrin Park which is also known as a cherry viewing place, the park is not crowded during the season. They enjoy viewing cherry blossoms quietly.
I don't know how many cherry trees are planted in the park. You can see them everywhere in the park. They are Someiyoshino, a popular variety of Sakura family.
People come with meals and drinks and spend time with their family or friends under the trees. You cannot believe it is near the noisy street many vehicles are going. The petals are fluttering in winds. The beautiful Sakura season looks ended. The season of Sakura is quite short. They come and leave quickly. That lets us Japanese feel a deep sense of pathos. I miss them from my heart.
Last weekend the cherry blossoms were almost in full bloom. The Negishi Shinrin Park, an oasis in the middle of the town, is painted in Sakura color. The horse race stand gets wet in the mist. The Yokohama landmark tower in Minato Mirai is on the right side.
This is what I took from Christ Church on the Yamate hill this morning. The wind was cold. It was just 8 C outside, the weather in around end of February. But Spring is creeping steadily toward us. The weather of early Spring will come back next week. Sakura, Cherry blossoms will be in full bloom soon.
Dewali 2015, celebration of Hindu New Year, started in a cloudy weather on Saturday. Even though the weather, the event was full of people both Japanese and Indian. This is the event of Indian music, dances and food. Indians came to Yokohama after the port was opened 150 years ago, started business and formed a large community here. There were many trading houses of India around here. I remember Air India once had a ticket office to serve the community.
